What Is Healthy Lighting and Why Does it Matter?

Life on earth evolved in day and night cycles as both plants and animals have a biological clock that controls the circadian rhythms. Today though, our increasing reliance on artificial lighting is adversely affecting that crucial rhythm.

For close to a century, incandescent lighting served the world well. Easy to produce and dispose of, they had a perfect CRI score of 100. But they kicked off a serious problem. In the 1990s, scientists blamed electric lighting for changing our sleep schedules from a natural 4-hour phase with an hour of wakefulness in-between to a single eight-hour phase every night. Incandescent lighting was also energy-hungry and vastly contributed to global warming.

Today, 90% of our day is spent indoors watching TV, using our smartphones, or working. These devices have a lot of blue light that our systems are very sensitive to. Researchers have linked high levels of blue light with an increase in diabetes, retinal degeneration disease, and cancer.

The negative health effects are already evident. One billion people suffer from Vitamin D deficiency while seasonal affective disorder – a type of depression that can occur in winter when there is less natural daylight – is rising. Shift workers face increased risks of cancer, obesity, and sleep problems.

Well designed lighting can go a long way in mitigating most of these problems. For instance, light trespassing into bedrooms can be reduced by the use of outdoor luminaires that shine light upwards or use shields to block stray light rays. Outdoor garden lights can be dimmed using intelligent control systems and wireless networks of motion sensors.

It is recommended that indoor spaces use warm white LEDs in the evenings with a colour temperature of 3000K or lower – and as little blue light as possible. At night, there should be no exposure to light or light should be limited to 600 nm. It is crucial that light is in-direct (to avoid glare), is flicker-free and has the ability to dim.

Recommended Lighting Levels for Residential and Office Spaces

As a rule of thumb, lighting for an area should be sufficient to work, use the facilities, and move safely without straining eyes. but, ensuring an area has adequate lighting can be tricky as there aren’t always clear guidelines on recommended light levels. Additionally, it can be difficult to measure how much light is needed.

Below is a helpful guide on the recommended lighting levels for common premises. 


Lighting for residential settings

A well-designed lighting system will ensure a space always has the right amount of light. It affords the ability to adjust the lighting to suit different situations and avoid over-lighting or underlighting.

General lighting should provide the minimum required lighting levels. For living rooms and bedrooms, consider using dimmers and control settings to afford lighting flexibility. For homes intended for the elderly, higher lux ranges are recommended.

Well-positioned lamps and socket outlets may be required to provide light for specific tasks including reading and food preparation. High colour rendering lighting may be significant and is an aspect that needs consideration.

Recommended lighting for individual rooms

Hallways

Downlights that sit flush with the ceiling can maximize the headroom in what’s often a cramped space. A lux level of 100 – 150 is recommended.

Living rooms

Downlights that sit flush with the ceiling can maximize the headroom in what’s often a cramped space. A lux level of 100 – 150 is recommended.

Living rooms require a relaxed ambiance and the flexibility to adjust lighting levels. Ideally, illumination should be set between 100 – 150 lux with the flexibility to be reduced to 60 lux.

Consider wall-mounted uplighters to avoid glare while table lamps can provide the localized lighting required for specific activities.

Dining rooms

Dining rooms should have about 150 lux but since the dining table is used for a variety of other activities, it is wise to include some flexibility. 150 – 200 lux works well for dining scenarios while 400 – 500 lux is suitable for when the kids are doing their homework. High CRI lighting is a necessity here.

Kitchens

The detailed tasks carried out in a kitchen make high lux levels mandatory. 150 – 200 lux is recommended at floor levels and 400 lux for worktops – downlights can deliver focused high lux lighting.

Bedrooms

Lighting levels in the bedroom should be controllable with the ability to provide 60 – 100 lux of light up to a maximum of 150 lux. For task lighting, consider localized lighting up to 400 lux. High CRI lights are a welcome addition – for example, it can help choose clothes.


Lighting for offices

Office lighting requires more attention because the employer has a legal responsibility to meet the recommended lighting levels.

According to the 1974 Health & Safety at Work Act, the employer must ensure the health and safety of its employees. This includes the responsibility to provide the necessary lighting for work to be completed safely. The act further states that the employee’s eyesight or overall health must not be in danger at any moment.

Regulation 8 of the Workplace Regulations Act 1992 dictates that the employer must make sure that:

  • There is natural light, so far as is reasonably practicable
  • Suitable and sufficient emergency lighting is provided where needed
  • Every workplace has suitable and sufficient lighting

Illumination levels in workplaces are generally determined by the tasks performed in the working area.

More often than not, offices are over lit due to the overwhelming use of outdated lighting systems. These lighting systems were intended for paper-based tasks, which required light levels of 500 – 750 lux. Today’s work generally revolves around computer-based tasks where lighting levels of 100 – 500 lux will suffice.

The HSE breaks down lighting requirements into five main categories.

A quick summary of the HSE guidelines is listed below.

  • Hazards should be easily noticeable so they can be assessed
  • Different colours should be distinguishable for safety reasons
  • Lighting should not cause stroboscopic effects, glare or flickers
  • No veiling reflection effect
  • Adjacent areas should not have substantially different levels of lighting
  • Individual needs must be considered and met
  • The lighting system must not pose a health and safety risk
  • Safe emergency lighting

Formerly the headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board or simply the ‘Dock Offices’ for 87 years, the Port of Liverpool building is one of the country’s many historic structures. Just before its hundredth birthday in 2009, a £10m restoration project was started on The Port of Liverpool Building. This lasted three years, and the idea was to bring back to life all the unique features and give it back its original glory.

Sports Lighting: V-TAC LED Floodlights for Al Hubaishi Football Stadium

The Client: Al Hubaishi Football Stadium

The Al-Hubaishi Football Stadium – named in memory of Muhammad Ali Al-Hubaishi from the Al Ahrar Football Club (now called Al Tilal) – was built in the 1930’s and it is one of the oldest football stadiums in the Arab world. After a lengthy period of restoration work, it opened and also welcomed the continuation of competitive football in Yemen last December 2020. 

The Project: Sports Lighting Upgrade

The Yemeni football league has been cancelled since 2014 due to the Civil War which also stopped all other footballing activities in the Middle Eastern country. Restoration work started leading to its reopening last December 2020, which included lighting upgrades. Being one of the main venues of football in the country, the Al Hubaishi Stadium required lighting fixtures with intensive illumination for the upcoming matches that would be held.

Cracking the Light Bulb Code: All You Need To Know About Bulb Types

To this date, there is a vast range of light bulbs currently available in the market. Knowing which is which will not just save you time, but also avoid errors and incur unnecessary costs, or worse, losing your clients’ trust. Generally, light bulbs are mainly categorised according to its base, shape, and size. The codes seen on light bulbs’ box packaging pertain to these aforementioned attributes.

BASE, SHAPE, & SIZE


For example – on the A60 light bulb, the letter – in this case, A – refers to the light bulb shape. The A shape is the classic bulb shape that has been the most common shape for GLS or General Lighting Service applications. The number that follows the letter indicates the nominal major diameter of the bulb in millimetres.

So in the case of the A60 light bulb – it has the classic light bulb shape, with a 60mm diameter.

The C series light bulbs refer to ‘candela’ or candle-shaped light bulbs, usually used in chandeliers, wall lamps, and more.

The P & G series are spherical, golf ball-shaped light bulbs.

The R and PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) series are reflector or spotlight light bulbs used in directional, ceiling lighting fittings.

The F series light bulbs are UFO-shaped big light bulbs, useful for their broader lighting scope.

On the other hand, choosing the correct base is very important, as they are not interchangeable. Each base corresponds to a certain holder where it is perfectly compatible.

UV-C lamps can be highly effective in disinfecting indoor spaces and would lessen the rate of transmission of COVID-19

With community centres, restaurants, and other commercial venues slowly starting to continue operations, and schools/childcare settings gradually welcoming students, establishments are looking for various ways to effectively lessen the risk of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in their respective premises. The Importance of CRI for Commercial Spaces

Sales posters and coupons are great, but if you are serious about driving sales, CRI is a term you must understand.

CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index and it measures the quality and accuracy of artificial light at rendering colours. It is measured on a scale of zero to one hundred and compares a light source against natural sunlight to indicate how closely it can replicate the true colours of an object. Natural sunlight and incandescent lighting have a CRI of hundred. Most common light sources have CRI’s between eighty to ninety.

What do you lose out by using low CRI lighting you may ask. Low CRI lamps deliver dull washed-out colours, sickly skin tones and lifeless eyes – failing to accurately portray a product to a viewer. With high-CRI lamps, colours pop out, textures stand out and finishes have a deep lustre to them.

A high colour rendering index is especially crucial to colour critical applications where presentation, colour accuracy, and the visual appeal is important. High CRI lighting can make food and produce in a grocery store look appealing, highlight clothing at a retail outlet and make a house on the market look vibrant and homely. It is often considered the fourth element of good design, as it turns colours and textures into a vivid palette of finishes.

Equally important to finishes and colours are how a person looks under a lamp. High-CRI lighting, specifically R9 and R13 values, produce more natural skin tones with better depth. CRI values of eighty and above effectively portray colours and finishes but if the most accurate rendering is necessary, lighting with values of ninety and above is recommended.

The colour rendering index of a light source will show the finer details in objects. In shipping yards, factories, warehouses and other industrial facilities, the ability to clearly see finer details is extremely important. Aside from the obvious safety regulations, workers can easily see the markings on boxes, manuals, containers and other objects. Simply put, lamps with the right CRI levels provide the most productive lighting levels for a working environment as opposed to orange or monochromatic blue-white light output. The variety of light distribution patterns available allow facilities managers to maximise fixture spacing, lighting levels and ensure uniformity. As a result, operations costs are reduced while the safety, efficiency, and quality of light in the workplace is improved.

In the era of incandescent lighting, CRI was not an issue due to its superior colour rendering. However, poor energy efficiency led to incandescent being phased out for more energy-efficient options like fluorescent lighting and LED lighting sources.

LEDs have been lauded for their energy efficiency but they also boast other benefits including a longer lifespan, absence of hazardous materials and reduced cost of maintenance. 1,200 Lamp Posts Have Been Installed Throughout Sharjah

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has announced the installation of 100 solar-powered lamp posts in the Yarmouk District of Khor Fakkan, as part of its plans to replace traditional street lighting with a solar-powered system on all the roads of the Emirate.

Traditional bulbs will be replaced with energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs to protect the environment and assure the project’s sustainability.

Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of the SEWA, affirmed the authority’s commitment to ration power consumption and conserve the environment and natural resources by adopting the latest technological and eco-friendly systems.

“The SEWA is using eco-friendly, energy-efficiency lamps and lighting solutions as part of its policy of using renewable energy and ensuring optimum utilisation of resources, in compliance with energy conservation principles of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and International Standardisation Organisation’s ISO:50001, which promotes using energy efficiently to help organisations save money, as well as conserve resources and tackle climate change,” Dr Al Leem added.

“ISO:50001 supports organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently, through the development of an energy management system.”

Currently, 1,200 lamp posts have been installed throughout the emirate, he noted.

The solar lighting projects will be carried out in most parts of the emirate, particularly on highways and residential areas.

“The move supports SEWA’s sustainable development strategy and its efforts to implement the rational use of energy and water, spread awareness on saving the environment, and conserve resources for generations to come,” he added.

Berkeley Lab Tests Smart LED Lighting in New York Living Laboratory

The combination of autonomous SSL and shading in a New York high rise office space has yielded 80% energy savings in some cases while also pleasing workers.

 

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has detailed a living laboratory test of solid-state lighting (SSL) and controls on a 40,000-ft2 floor in a New York commercial office building. Berkeley Lab worked with the Building Energy Exchange (BEEx) on the LED lighting project that also included comprehensive light and occupancy sensors along with connected window shade controls. Berkeley Lab believes the work will speed market adoption of smart lighting and the BEEx will use the work to further its educational mission, serving lighting designers and specifiers that are working on commercial spaces.

Lately, much of our coverage about smart lighting and the Internet of Things (IoT) has been focused on what lighting-based connectivity can offer in supporting new applications and services such as indoor positioning, security, asset tracking, and more. For example, Acuity Brands said earlier this year that it has deployed indoor positioning technology in 20 million ft2 of retail space. The IoT hype can make it easy to forget that networked control of lighting and shades confined to a space such as an office floor can deliver tremendous benefits in energy used.

Still, roadblocks to more smart lighting installations remain. “Context matters when it comes to figuring out where the market barriers are with respect to contractors, facility managers, and office workers — isolated tests in a laboratory environment are often not enough,” said Eleanor Lee. “Reducing stakeholders’ uncertainty about performance and occupant response in a real-world setting can be critical to accelerating market adoption.” Lee is the Berkeley Lab scientist that led the New York project intended to document the benefits of smart lighting in a working office space — thus the characterization as a living lab.

Office smart lighting trial; comnbination of SSL with sensors and window shade controls

Berkeley Lab and BEEx collaborated on an office smart lighting trial in New York City that combined SSL with sensors and window shade controls.

Indeed, the project team monitored energy usage and other characteristics of the office space for a full year before the retrofit to SSL and controls took place. BEEx acted as the local manager of the project.

As the nearby photo illustrates, the retrofit replaced fluorescent T5 lighting with dimmable LED fixtures delivering direct and indirect lighting. The floor-to-ceiling windows received automated shades. And connected sensors spread throughout the mostly-open space can detect localized light levels and occupancy.

The test further considered thermal elements of the space given that the ubiquitous windows and daylight can heat a space. The test included the use of linear slot diffusers along the top of the windows that can mitigate rising temperatures. And underfloor air distribution (UFAD) diffusers were used to improve airflow and allow for localized control. Thermal imaging was used to document acceptable temperatures throughout the retrofitted space.

The smart lighting project sought to balance the benefits of natural light with visual and thermal comfort and provide workers with enjoyable views when possible. Shades had to be lowered at times to mitigate glare but could be opened at other times, both reducing the need for artificial lighting and fully revealing views for the office.

The study focused on the 40-ft perimeter zone of the office floor. Compared to the measured baseline, the electricity required for lighting dropped 79% over the course of six months in which BEEx has monitored the installation. Peak electrical demand dropped 74%.

The study did not measure energy dedicated to powering the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system in the space. But the researchers did estimate the impact on HVAC energy and also projected the measured data to suggest an entire building retrofit would have delivered savings of $730,000 per year. Based on installation cost of $3–$10 per square foot, an entire building project would pay back in 3–12 years.

BEEx will take the results of the project to help the lighting community with tools and other resources. “Using everything we learned on this project, we’ve developed a series of tools that will really help the engaged design professional or building owner make better decisions about lighting system upgrades, and avoid the common pitfalls on the road to a high-performance office space,” said Yetsuh Frank, BEEx managing director of strategy and programs.

The Berkeley Lab has not been as involved in the SSL sector as has the DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). PNNL has been behind many of the DOE Caliper and Gateway projects. We have covered many of those reports such as a recent Gateway report on four common indoor lighting applications.

Still, the Berkeley Lab is adding to the DOE’s SSL initiative. About a year back we reported on a Berkeley project involving solar-powered LED lighting outdoors where the researchers said such lighting could create 2 million jobs in developing regions.
